An anti-racist approach to Maths Awareness Month
Maths Awareness Month is marked across UK schools during April.
The current eurocentric curriculum assumes that white, Western knowledge is the most valuable - or that knowledge beyond this region doesn’t even exist!
In contrast, an anti-racist curriculum is responsive to the experiences and backgrounds of students and more accurately reflects the reality of the world we live in. This approach supports young people to think critically and understand the social and political structures that shape their lives. It turns education into “the practice of freedom” (as described by philosopher and educator Paulo Freire) and equips them with the tools to transform the world around them.
This resource explores three ways that educators can adopt an approach in maths which challenges Eurocentricity, applies maths as a tool for social justice and involves parents/carers in meaningful ways.
