Letter templates for parents - Supporting Palestine in school

For two years, children across the UK have been witnessing the live-streamed escalation of genocide in Gaza. Young people are grieving and are trying to make sense of how tens of thousands of Palestinians are being intentionally starved and bombed.

However, instead of being supported and given the space to stand up for human rights and learn about social justice, our children are constantly silenced, policed, and punished. Now more than ever it is important that we support our children’s voices and their right to freedom of speech.

This may take the form of wearing a badge, a keffiyeh, drawing the Palestinian flag or writing an essay or poem. Silencing this expression will only be harmful and fracture relations with teachers.

We have created two letter templates for parents to use in support of their children’s right to show solidarity with Palestine in school:

1. Send a letter to your school in advance showing you support your child’s actions:

Send this letter beforehand to inform your school that you support your child’s actions and encourage the school to uphold their values and duty of care.

2. If your child is prevented from showing solidarity, send this letter written by barristers to ask the school to provide reasons for their actions:

We also suggest trying to have a conversation with the school first and if they do not respond or do not  provide an adequate response then this letter can be a useful next step.
